Types Of Massage Stones

Wednesday, June 1st, 2011

Stone massages can be provided using either hot or cold stones, with each type of stone providing very specific benefits to the client. There are different types of stones used for each type of massage, as certain stones are more suitable for retaining heat or cold properties. Regardless of the temperature of the stones, both types of therapies relieve stress and deeply relax the muscles.

Basalt stone is one of the most popular stones used in hot stone massage. The heated stones effectively warm the body and makes it easy for oil absorption. These oils occur naturally in basalt stones, as they are rich in minerals like manganese, serpentine, olivine, magnesium, and iron. The combination of these minerals creates a naturally lubricating property felt on the stones. This oil works much like the others therapists often apply, and function as another way for muscles to experience relief from tension and stress.

Jade is a popular hot massage stone. They also work well as a muscle relaxant, making them an ideal choice for a heated stone massage session. Massage therapists believe that jade has powers beyond those of good heat retention, and use these stones also because ancient history suggests they promote longevity, generosity, compassion, justice, and courage. Massage therapists are particularly fond of jade stones, as they also work well for cold stone massages. The chilled stones bring the clients into a deep state of relaxation. The stones and the hands are both tools.

Marble stones of varying shapes are also popular for cold stone massage sessions. Cold marble stones can be laid on specific points of the body and remove blocked energy. Marble is derived from living organisms, mixed with calcite and limestone. This combination is believed to help clients experience a return of balance in their lives.

Sardonyx, much like jade, is a popular choice among therapists as it can be used both heated and chilled. This equates to a lot of financial savings as the therapist can reuse the same stones more often. These stones are known for their ability to assist clients in achieving deep feelings of both relaxation and protection. These stones are popular among sleep deprived clients. These stones are often used to help relieve anxiety and stress because of these deeply relaxing properties they impart.

Some of these stones are more affordable and easily obtained than others, which makes choices like basalt among the most popular. The person working on the stones should be professional and know all the uses of the stones. Obviously this is not the case, as some stones simply have properties, which make them best suited for either hot or cold stone massage therapy. Other stones simply don’t work at all and would never be used for this type of therapy. When choosing the right stones for your massage therapy, keep in mind not only considerations like cost, but also the properties you’re seeking out for your clients.

Advantages Of Trail Running

Tuesday, May 31st, 2011

Trail running is a great alternative for those who have an interest in running but have little desire for spending their time on a treadmill or hitting the pavement (literally), and dodging traffic through busy city streets and sidewalks.

There are a number of benefits to trail running, and one of the least obvious is the improvement you’ll see to your stride once you begin trail running. The uneven and unexpected surfaces often encountered during a trail run make the runner’s stride much more efficient. Road running may get you from point A to point B faster than trail running, but the lack of variance in the surface makes it easier for the stride to become normalized. Runners may become locked into speed. This doesn’t happen with trail running, as the body constantly has to accommodate the different terrain. The strides become more explosive and elongated after several miles on the trail. The core muscle group will strengthen, as the whole body must brace itself for rough terrain.

There is usually less chance of injury during a trail run. Road running is often accompanied by repeated pounding to the feet, which may eventually cause stress fractures and axial stress. The terrain of trail running provides much more of a cushion to the feet and body, minimizing the shock to the body. It’s important to remember that while there is less stress put on the body during a trail run, you will expend more energy during a trail run. When you first start trail running, you’ll need to work harder initially, so be sure you anticipate running a shorter distance for the first few weeks. The body needs to adjust to the changing terrain and unanticipated hills.

You need to adjust to the trail, so make sure you’re running slowly to accomodate it. It is easy to loose your footing after it has rained. Have plenty of caution when you’re running and it’s light outside. While one of the benefits of trail running is that it keeps you from getting bored (with the changing scenery), this same changing scenery can be a definite safety risk.

Trail running is a great way to introduce you to running or breakup the monotony of a regular treadmill running routine. It’s important to remember that trail running has its risks, so be sure you proceed with caution. It is easy to get caught up in the scenes without knowing. That’s why it’s not only necessary to only run on trails during the daylight hours, but also always be sure you’re aware of your footing during the run. There are shoes that are designed specifically for running, and have great grip. For those who decide to trail run on a regular basis, these can provide the appropriate kind of stability for trail running and give you a little more grip on the bottoms for any rocky terrain. Always make sure you have the right type of running shoes for what you’re running on!

Is Cheerleading A Sport?

Monday, May 23rd, 2011

Cheerleading, or “cheer,” as it is known colloquially by its participants, is often maligned as not being a sport. Those who partake in cheer, or who follow it closely, argue that it is a sport, and this source of acrimony is one of the most heavily debated topics in the modern sports world. Many people believe that cheer should not be considered a sport, but this narrow point of view fails to fully examine all of the facts.

Sports are using known for being able to be played for recreation. A sport can be played by professionals or you can attempt to do yourself. In this regard, cheerleading falls short of the mark. There are not that many opportunities to cheer in recreational professional settings. Rather, most cheer activities are dependent upon another sport: cheering at a high school basketball game when a team scores points, or a routine done at halftime of a football game. This is one point that many people make when asserting that cheer is not a sport.

Another gripe that many people have with cheer is that it “does not have competitions.” This is entirely inaccurate. Many people know cheerleaders best from them on the sidelines of athletic competitions. The reality is that there are several cheerleading competitions all across the country every year, and there is even a nationally-sanctioned governing body for the sport at the high school level. Some people don’t regard these as sports because they feel that they are not competetive. Competition in cheer can be very difficult, they can be just as hard as the more popular sport competitions. Part of the image problem that cheer suffers from, and what makes it such an easy target for those who would malign it, is that the sport does not get very much exposure on a national or even regional scale.

One characteristic that is shared by both cheer and other, more established sports such as football and baseball is the prevalence of injuries among participants. In football, concussions, broken limbs, and a whole host of other maladies are entirely possible for participants, and every player goes into every game knowing that there is a risk that he will end up being carted off the field on a gurney. These injuries are a part of the public consciousness about football. Cheerleading is underexposed to the general public. Because bodies are often being thrown or are doing flips or turns in mid-air, the potential for injury is just as great, if not greater, than in a more “traditional” sport, such as football. Cheerleading causes one of the most injuries, just as much as a full contact sport.

Because of a lack of knowledge amongst the general public about the characteristics and requirements of cheer, some people continue to accuse it of not being a sport, and will likely continue to do so until they become more educated about it.

Bodybuilding Today

Monday, May 23rd, 2011

Bodybuilding is a sport that began before the turn of the 20th century. Back then, not much research had been conducted on the effects of excessive weightlifting on the human body. In the more than one hundred years since bodybuilding first appeared in popular culture, much knowledge has been gained about how different muscle groups interact with each other and the best ways in which to stimulate those muscles so that they will gain mass. Bodybuilding as a sport has always been about maximizing the size of the muscles of the human body, and today, with the tools and technology available, becoming a bodybuilder is an accessible path for just about anyone.

Building awareness of bodybuilding is popular among our culture today. Sporting events featuring massive, hulking men and women are regularly played on television, and these competitors pose in a variety of fashions, each striving to appear as the most attractive and evenly-developed contestant. Most Americans can name at least one former professional bodybuilder: Arnold Schwarzenegger, the actor and former governor of California, as well as a seven-time Mr. Olympia is one of the most prestigious as far as bodybuilding.

One need not be a professional to become a bodybuilder, though. There are many resources for the amateur bodybuilder. These are filled with workout regimens, dieting tips, and a host of other information that the beginning bodybuilder will find quite useful in his or her quest to get “ripped.” There are also several social networking sites on the Internet today, similar to Facebook, but dedicated entirely to bodybuilding. People who use these websites can swap tips, recipes, and anything else related to their hobby.

Another thing that has greatly increased the ease with which people can get involved in bodybuilding is the development and wide availability of weightlifting supplements. In the past, the use of anabolic steroids was common among bodybuilders, but these dangerous drugs are both illegal and often highly lethal. There are many ways to enhance the single workout these days. Certain specific supplements can change the body for the better. It is now easier to gain muscle faster and easier, which allows the accessibility of the sport. These weightlifting supplements can be found in almost any drugstore, as well as several major retailers. Another diet additive that is commonly used by bodybuilders is protein shakes, which are powders that, when mixed with water, create a beverage that is extremely high in protein content. Protein is essential to building and maintaining muscle tone.

Bodybuilding has changed very much over the years~Bodybuilding has changed dramatically over time}~{Bodybuilding has changed very much over the years}~Bodybuilding has changed dramatically over time}. Today, there are professional competitions all around the world, and public consciousness of the sport has increased significantly, as many bodybuilders become quite popular. The ease with which bodybuilders can enhance their bodies and network makes this a very a sport that is very much within reach of many people.

The Benefits Of Shiatsu Massage

Thursday, April 21st, 2011

Shiatsu is a Japanese term for ‘finger pressure’ and refers to an ancient technique of pressing the fingers and palms on the body to relieve pressure. This type of massage is beneficial for a variety of aches and pains such as sport injuries, whiplash, reduced mobility, joint and back pain, neck stiffness and headaches. Pressure is applied to particular areas of the body and helps ato maintain health and well-being. Shiatsu massages uses specific techniques to correct imbalances in the body.

Massage incorporates various techniques such as pulling, pushing, tapping, stroking, squeezing and rubbing of the body in an effort to promote proper circulation within the body. Shiatsu massage uses the thumbs, fingers and palms to stimulate the body. By applying pressure to specific areas of the body, Shiatsu massages are able to relax pressure build up. This massage is supposed to provide uncomplicated movements that effect energy levels in the body.

Traditional Chinese medicine operates under the belief that ‘chi’ exists within the body. ‘Chi’ being energy which circulates through channels which are called meridians. When chi flows freely throughout the body it brings a feeling of strength to the individual and allows spent energy to leave the body along with toxins. Ailments such as depression, anxiety, insomnia and headaches are all seen as blockages or diversions of chi.

Shiatsu is also commonly known as Zen Shiatsu and also consists of several other types. Some types concentrate on acupressure points while others may emphasize the entire body. Practitioners of shiatsu massage see simple ailments as bigger occurrences within the body. A headache is an obstruction of chi. The term, ‘chi’, refers to energy patterns throughout an individuals body. Shiatsu is applied to different parts of the body as a whole or parts when there is pain.

Treating the entire body rather than affected areas helps to bring about a longer and more effective healing. During a Shiatsu session, the therapists uses their thumbs, finger and palms to pinpoint ailing areas and helps to correct them allowing chi to move throughout the body without hindrance. It can be considered a diagnosis or treatment in one. Preventing illnesses is best done by stimulating the immune system which Shiatsu targets. When the entire body is treated, it is able to naturally heal itself and restore its functions. The nervous and circulatory systems as well as the bone and muscle structures are aided during a massage and are able to re-energize themselves.

Shiatsu massage has many benefits which in turn promote a great sense of well-being and health in all individuals. Shiatsu massage helps heal the body’s natural energy. Additionally, Shiatsu massage benefits the muscles and tissues by relaxing them, reduces and helps to manage stress, releases toxins, prevents disease, increases flexibility, improves blood circulation, reduces mental anxieties and blood pressure, balances chi, increases spiritual and mental awareness and calms the mind and body.

The Tale Of The Body Bar

Monday, April 18th, 2011

Those who lift weights tend to fall into one of two categories: those who are looking to get very strong and be able to lift progressively bigger and bigger amounts of weight, and those who are looking to add tone to their muscles. Each goal requires different kinds of weight training. Those wanting to be able to lift a lot of weight will, during the course of their training, lift a lot more weight than those who are looking to add tone to their muscles. Remember that during training, is “high reps, low resistance.” This means that whereas a power lifter may lift five hundred pounds ten times, someone looking to work on their muscle tone might only lift fifty pounds, but might do it a hundred times. Low resistance, high reps.

One of the best pieces of fitness equipment that was ever invented for those looking to increase their muscle tone is the Body Bar. The Body Bar is a weight in the shape of a cylinder, like a heavy stick. That description, however, does not do it justice. The Body Bar is extremely versatile, and can be used in a nearly limitless amount of possibilities to increase physical fitness and muscular tone.

Body Bars come with different weights and you can do many things with them. You can use the Body Bar on your upper or lower body. Again, this piece of equipment is perfect for your goal of adding tone to your muscles, because it does not weigh all that much, which allows you to complete many more repetitions, which is the key to this kind of weight training. It is not hard to imagine doing fifty or one hundred squats with a thirty-pound Body Bar, but doing that many squats with three hundred pounds on your back would be pretty close to impossible for all but the strongest of weight trainers.

Body Bars have other applications besides weight training. Some people will run distances holding them over their heads, which both increases the muscular tone of their arms and upper body muscles, while also being a better cardiovascular workout than what they would get from simply running without a Body Bar. Along this same token, some exercise gurus will run with a Body Bar, and pump out repetitions of curls or overhead presses or upright rows along the way. It takes a bit of coordination, but the effect on your muscles will be very visible after prolonged use.

People seek to increase their muscle tone and examine the benefits of the Body Bar. This piece of equipment is great for that purpose. Not many products out there on the market can compete with the attributes of the Body Bar.

Improving Core Strength

Monday, April 18th, 2011

Athletes, bodybuilders, or anyone else looking to get stronger or better physically fit, share a common need in their goal: the necessity of a strong “core,” essentially, the muscles of the abdomen and chest. This part of the body is known as the core because it is both at roughly the center of the body, but also because every athletic movement begins with these muscle groups. In short, to become a better competitor, or a more physically capable person, one must have an extremely strong core. A group of strong core muscles is hard to beat.

There are ways to improve the inner core strength. The simplest of these exercises, and the ones most commonly recognized, are the sit-up and its cousin, the crunch. These exercises work abdominal muscles on the front of the stomach, and are a great starting point for the improvement of core strength. Sit-ups and crunches are really good for your body because there are more muscle groups in that area that needs work as well.

Another great simple exercise for core strength improvement is the pushup. Commonly associated with punishment, the pushup is also an excellent measure of core strength, because it tests the ability of someone to perform an exercise against the most common type of resistance: their own body. If one cannot do pushups, then one does not have the core strength required to support his or her own body weight, and a lot more time spent exercising that core is essential. Pushups can also be down backwards; that is, with the front of the body facing the sky, and this will also work important core muscles.

One great measure of core strength is one’s ability to do “the plank.” This exercise, which was likely dreamed up by a twisted person, involves resting on one’s elbows and the tips of their toes, while holding a flat and level back. That is a very simple explanation, and the reality of this exercise is that it is very difficult. Some people may have trouble holding it for a few seconds or minutes. It is a good way to see one’s core ability, but the body weight of the person provides resistance. People who are looking for more of a challenge can have a workout partner place weights on the small of their back while they are doing this exercise, which will increase the amount of effort they have to expend. Athletes who need a strong core, can do this for 5-10 minutes more.

Anyone looking to get started in athletics, bodybuilding, or any other kind of physical activity, or simply to get in better shape, needs a strong group of core muscles in order to achieve their goals. It doesn’t hurt to work these muscles to get a great set of abs.

Stretches For Running

Monday, April 18th, 2011

There are runners who don’t stretch at all, and then there are those who do stretch, but aren’t sure when they should be stretching or what kind of stretches will benefit their bodies and performance the best. The classic stretch you often see people doing before a run or race is the lunge forward, with the bounce as they push their bodies down, or the grabbing of the leg behind their bodies, while balancing on the other leg. Neither of these stretches provides much benefit, but they tend to make runners feel like they’ve done “something” before they head out on the pavement.

If runners only stretch at one point during their run, the key time for stretching is after the run is finished. Stretching before a run, as long as it’s done well and not done with “cold muscles” is harmless, but provides little benefit. The best way to get your ’stretch’ is to take it slowly at first, and gradually ease into running. Stretching after a run includes many benefits as well. The best way to cool down after a run is with light stretching. It gives you a chance to strengthen muscles so that you don’t get cramped up.

A run should finish the same way it started. Runners often get that “race mentality” and want to push their bodies hard at the end of the run. They should be doing the opposite, and keeping the last five to ten minutes of the run easy as they gradually slow down. The muscles are better prepared when you stretch ahead of time.

An important stretch for the legs following a run is the “heel drop.” This stretch is key to preventing Achilles tendinitis. Doing the heel drop is easy and involves standing on a curb with the front foot, then dropping the heels. Once you have done it, count to 5 and lift them again. This should be done five to ten times. Another key stretch for preventing Achilles tendinitis is the “calf raise.” This also helps prevent shin splints, which are all too common for the runner. Doing this requires you to stand in one place, lift up on the heels, count to five, drop down, and then repeat several times. If you only have time for two stretches these are key to protecting the legs from injury.

There are even more extensive stretches that can be done, when time allows, but for a basic stretching period after a casual run, even just a few stretches can keep you injury free and running faster. The most common injury is that the muscles are overused and not properly stretched. Take a few minutes each time to devote to stretching and cooling down. You should not run if you did not stretch!

5 Big Errors To Prevent Anytime Rendering Hot Stones Massages

Wednesday, March 23rd, 2011

Have you ever made a mistake? If you are a human who lives on planet Earth, in all probably—you have. The key is to minimize the number of mistakes we make. Sometimes we can even eliminate them. In the case of a hot stones massage, it is important to follow some basic protocol, in order to make the process as successful as possible. Here are some important mistakes to avoid as a hot stone massage therapist:

1. Never heat the stones to a temperature that is too hot
You can use several methods to heat the stones, before conducting a hot stone massage. These methods include a heater designed for hot stones, and a crockpot. Either of these instruments is effective in heating the stones. However, it is vital that the water temperature is proper, to ensure that the customer is not burned. An ideal temperature range is 120°-150° Fahrenheit.

2. Never give a hot stone massage under certain health circumstances
A hot stone massage provides many health benefits, such as improved blood circulation, a lower heart rate, reduction in bodily toxins, and increased muscle relaxation. Speaking of muscles, if a patient has inflamed muscles or damaged muscle tissue, then you should consider giving a cold stone massage instead. To provide an example, a stone cold massage with marble stones will help you to spread out the ache in the muscle tissue, thus accelerating the treatment process.

3. Never put heated stones directly on the backbone
When positioning various heated stones on the patient’s body, use medium-sized stones for the backbone. However, it is important never to put the stones DIRECTLY on the backbone instead. Remember that the spinal card is the pathway between your brain and your body’s nerves. Thus, placing heat directly on the spinal cord, could damage it.

4. Never fail to communicate periodically with the patient
It is important to communicate with the patient before the massage starts, and during the massage. You do not have to share your life story, but it is important to interact with the patient. Before you begin the massage, verify that the room temperature is okay with him or her. Then while placing the heated stones on the patient, ask if the temperature is too hot. As you proceed with the massage, ask the patient whether the pressure of the massage is ideal.

5. Never fail to sanitize the stones between customers
Before giving your next hot stone massage, it is important to use a sanitizer on the stones. Louis Pasteur was the first scientist to prove the link between bacteria and the transmission of certain diseases. In that spirit, keep in mind that simply heating the stones in water will not eliminate the bacteria. You must use a sanitizer.

As with any other activity, we can make various errors when giving a hot stone massage. However, by becoming aware of such possible errors and being conscientious about them, we can avoid making the blunders. Knowing the possible mistakes during the hot stone massage, can help you to avoid them!

Consuming Green Tea After Having A Hot Stone Massage Means Drinking To Your Health

Wednesday, March 23rd, 2011

Is it possible to use all five senses actively during a massage session? The sense of touch is the most obvious one, which the massage itself of the therapist, actives. Next, the sound of relaxation music impacts the sense of hearing. The use of aromatherapy activates our sense of smell. Even the ambiance of the massage room itself can excite our visual sensory receptors. Finally, sipping a cup of lukewarm green tea can top off a wonderful hot stones massage experience.

Okay, I admit it: I am a customer service fanatic. If a company does not supply a quality product or service, I take my business elsewhere. I never make unreasonable demands, simply because, “The customer is always right.” Having said that, after an enjoyable hot stone therapeutic massage that turns on the senses and de-stresses your body, a cup of green tea is a mouth watering icing on the cake. Now, more than ever, customers are looking for low prices and solid customer service. A complimentary serving of green tea helps to meet that second requirement.

What exactly is green tea? Interestingly, manufacturers use the same type of plant, Camellia sinesis, to produce green tea and other types of tea (i.e. oolong and black tea). The difference in the teas is in the process that companies use to create it. One major distinction in the making of green tea is the lack of fermentation. Skipping that step puts the “green” in green tea.

Why would green tea be particularly beneficial after a hot stone massage? The fermentation of black tea destroys several nutrients, making it less healthy than green tea. Another particular benefit of green tea is that it contains the strongest forms of polyphenols. What are polyphenols? These are a type of antioxidants, which serve in slowing down the damage that oxygen can cause. Researchers have discovered that antioxidants can help to prevent forms of various diseases, such as:

• heart disease
• neurological diseases
• cancer

How effective is green tea as an antioxidant? The answer is quite mind-boggling. The most significant active object in green tea is Epigallo Catechin Gallate (EGCG). While you should not stop eating your fruits and veggies, consider the fact that EGCG is SEVERAL times a more potent antioxidant than two other antioxidant heavyweights: Vitamin C and Vitamin E.

Furthermore, if you are on a fat-burning mission, then consider green tea. It boosts your body’s burning of calories and oxidation of fat. Thus, green tea can complement a sensible diet and exercise regimen.

The health benefits of green tea continue the health benefits that the hot stone massage itself provides. Hot stone massages can remove toxins from your body, increase your blood circulation, lower your heart rate, calm your psyche, and relax your muscles.

After a soothing and relaxing hot stone massage, green tea is a cheery that tops off the experience. While a hot stone massage can provide many health benefits, drinking green tea afterwards can further bolster your body’s defense against sickness and disease. Drink to your health!
