An Overview Of Recumbent Bikes

Saturday, May 28th, 2011

Bicycling has always been an effective way to get in shape and tone the body because it places stress and demand on every muscle in the body. This is why upright exercise bikes have been so popular for in-home fitness. Today, you have the option of an upright bike or recumbent bikes which have a more relaxed, gentle seating position. Recumbent bikes still burn a lot of calories, but they are gentler on the joints so you are less likely to come away with an injury.

When recumbent bikes were first designed it was use in physical therapy. Therapy patients often cannot balance themselves on a regular bike seat and many have difficulty getting up on an upright bike because of the center bar. That is why many recumbent bikes are designed with a step-through design that doesn’t require lifting the leg to mount. As the general public placed more demand for access to these bikes the market for residential models took off.

It isn’t difficult to find a great recumbent bike today, since all fitness manufacturers are making them. The Schwinn 240 Recumbent Exercise Bike is a great reference for features found on a typical low to mid range recumbent bike.

Schwinn is a leading brand in the home fitness market today and they are known for many very affordable models. The Schwinn 240 model sells under the $1,000 price range and is considered a lower end model. Yet, it offers all the standard features consumers expect when bringing home an exercise bike today.

The Schwinn 240 Bike is designed with a heavy 20 pound flywheel and a roomy seat so users of all sizes can get comfortable. Users can adjust the console and the seat to ensure a comfortable position and the legs stretch out easily in front of the body to the pedals. The console is a nice size as well so it isn’t difficult to see workout feedback.

The 240 Schwinn bike is suitable for all users, even those who have difficulty stepping over that middle bar on regular bikes. The frame is a step-through design where you just step into the middle and sit down. There is no bar to lift over.

The Schwinn 240 recumbent exercise bike also offers a variety of convenience features that make the bike more effective for users who want to lose weight or meet fitness goals. There are 16 different resistance options and a variety of workouts programmed into the console. The console is even designed to work with wireless heart rate monitors, though it does not come with a wireless chest strap like many higher priced recumbent bikes include.

You don’t get all the bells and whistles on this bike, but you get all the expected features plus a bit more for a nice price.

Some of the other features that you may be able to find on higher priced recumbent bikes include heart rate controlled workout programs, mp3 player connection ports with built-in speaker systems, and television screens that flip up from the console. There are even high end recumbent bikes that can communicate with a computer to show you imagery of real life scenery around the world while you bike the landscape from those destinations. The technology in the fitness industry is nothing short of amazing!

Here’s How You Can Lose Belly Fat

Friday, March 4th, 2011

Are you trying to lose that annoying Belly Fat? I’m sure you have heard that sit-ups and crunches are the way to do it, because those exercises make use of the abdominal muscles . However while it is absolutely true that sit-ups will strengthen the abdominal muscles and make you stronger in that area, and you may look thinner because your improved muscles hold in the fat better, this does not actually reduce belly fat in itself.

We need to look at how the body works and how it is able to actually lose weight in order to lose that belly fat . The simple fact is that if you are going to lose weight - from any part of your body - you need regular exercise. The fact that the most obvious and visible area of excess fat in your body is your belly does not alter this fact. When you do not exercise enough, or over-eat for a protracted period, one of the areas which naturally shows this excess more than others is the belly. Similarly if you start to exercise and lose weight, it will disappear quickest from the same belly area. Healthy exercise is the true ingredient !

Diet plays a critical role in losing or gaining weight in addition to exercising . You can exercise but still find you are gaining weight if you are eating very badly or in large quantities. So both exercise and diet are required to get the full effect. You need to adjust your diet so that you are burning more calories than you consume, at this point you start to “burn” the calories stored as fat in your body. Obviously changing your diet to reduce the amount of calories being consumed helps, as does reducing the actual quantities of food you eat if you have been eating excessive amounts.

Exercising and eating the right foods are truly the key to burning belly fat . So the two key action points are firstly to reduce the calories you eat, with smaller amounts of food or lower calorie foods. Secondly every day perform some physical exercise. Do this and you WILL lose that belly fat!

Doing Cardio Exercise at Home

Tuesday, December 15th, 2009

There is a mind-boggling selection of home cardio equipment being sold in shops or on the web, and this equipment could give you a long, comfortable life. * Is that machine the right size?

A treadmill needs to be lengthy enough for you to run on, and the owner should be tall enough to use the foot rests as well as the grips on a new elliptical machine. Sit in a machine before you get it; getting a refund will often be a lot of work.
*  Will the resistance adjustments work with your workout levels, and can they adjust forward from there? The equipment should be able to adjust as you progress.
* How quiet is that piece of equipment? This seems like a silly factor, but you, your family, and perhaps a few neighbors have to be able to put up with you exercising on that equipment – even if it’s at 3:00 in the morning. A soild unit to invest in is the Total Gym 1100.

As soon as you have found the perfect model of home cardio equipment which you could afford, fit in, and live with, one more question is yet to be dealt with. Will you actually work out on the product? Buying some home cardio equipment won’t induce you to take advantage of it if you’re not exercising regularly currently. Work Around Your Body’s “Design Limitations” With A Weight Vest

Saturday, May 16th, 2009

I’ve got bad knees, and I’m not getting any younger, but my cardio’s better than guys half my age AND I’m largely injury free.

Years of high impact sports and abuse have left them weak in my middle-age.  Treadmills are the only thing I run on these days, the road’s too hard on the joints.   I’ve tried everything, acupuncture, massage you name it, well everything except surgery, but the damage has already been done.  They’re never going to be perfect again and that ache’s not going to go away even if I’m wearing a pair of $200 running shoes.

Yeah, I know, I could go swimming but I love being outdoors.  Running on a treadmill’s nearly as boring as swimming in a pool to me.  My knees won’t let me run fast enough to work my cardio, and those treadmills don’t get steep enough to be a worthwhile workout.  I’d hit a “design limitation” of my body.  I couldn’t do any more without hurting myself.

I wasn’t going to give up though.  I like doing beep tests.  Not good for the knees so I don’t do them too often but I like doing them anyway.  For kicks.  Leaving those guys half my age behind is my own personal ego trip.  I wasn’t going to let all this good cardio go to waste.

Then it occurred to me..

Why not make walking, an easy thing as hard as possible to do?

Walking’s low-impact, and I like walking around in the local parks, and especially up hills as that can be quite a challenge.  I strapped a weight vest on and went up that big hill near my town.  It was great!  No knee aches and with a moderate amount of weight, it’s surprisingly hard worth.

All it took was about 20% of my body weight to give me a good workout.

With a weight vest, my heart rate can hit 160 walking up some of the steep hills here pretty easily  I can keep it up at 160 for as long as I’m walking uphill so I get a low-impact, injury free workout that can be as intense as I like.  If I want to work harder, I just go find a bigger hill to climb.

Thinking about it, you could use a weight vest to make any “easy” exercise harder, if you can’t do something, find some other drill that’s easier to do, that doesn’t injure or stress your body and make it harder.

Finding the Right Fitness Equipment

Sunday, May 10th, 2009

In this modern, often hectic time, being able to find time in your very busy day to work on your fitness has become very difficult.  Most of us do not have the time to get to the gym as often as we should and so our general health perhaps is not as good as it could or should be.

But, being the sort of person who realises the importance of quality health and fitness you look for a solution to this problem.  You quickly realise that the best option for you would be to buy a piece of home gym equipment.  Something compact and yet very effective.  A machine that is simple to use but gives you a good solid workout.

The answer to your need is the more and more popular indoor rowing machine.  There was a time not so long ago that rowing machines were rarely seen in the home and were only rarely seen in the gymnasium and these were usually very large machines that would have no place in your home.  Then, gradually, small rowing machines were being sold in large retail stores but these were often badly made which was shown in the price.  They tended to be low resistance machines that gave little or no feedback or variation of resistance which is vital for increased fitness.  These poor quality, low resistance rowing machines gave a bad reputation to rowing machines in general as a waste of effort.  But as any real fitness expert will inform you, a well made, modern rowing machine can provide you with a workout like no other piece of fitness equipment.

The modern rowing machine however has gained a massive leap in terms of quality.  Although a home rowing machine may never be as strong as those found in the gym, they are strong enough to support most weights, will last you many years and give you a superb all over aerobic workout comparable to the effectiveness of swimming.  Rowing machines are compact, easily stored and are easy to move around the home easily.

With all this considered, without a doubt the rowing machine is the ideal addition to the professionals busy lifestyle that makes daily fitness quick and very effective.
