A review of resistance band training

If you want to improve your reaction time and quickness, if you want to get to the ball first, if you want that all important hole shot boost that puts you ahead of your opponents in the first 5 steps, then resistance band training is what you need in your tool bag

You are limited to your imagination with these. They are easy to take with you no matter where you go. More than any other piece of equipment, they excel at providing horizontal resistance. You can tie yourself off to a solid object and practice sprint take offs, or changing direction drills.

And your not limited to just those. whatever exercises you can do with dumbbells and barbells, you can replicate with resistance bands. You can use bands in those workouts simutaneously with the other equipment.

You can incorporate resistance bands into bodyweight exercises to up the ante of the difficulty factor.

Bands can be used for assistance as well as resistance. Dip or a pull-up to difficult to do? Use the bands to assist you, until your strong enough to do them on your own.

Resistance bands will really help to improve your speed and agility in any ball sport. The guys you play ball with will be amazed at how much faster and stronger you are after just a few weeks of training with resistance bands.

Dave Schmitz, “The Band Man” has a great site and a free membership area with videos on training tips and drills for using the bands. there’s also a bunch of videos on youtube to get ideas from.

In addition to the bands, he has DVD’s & ebooks to show you how to use them. As a matter of fact, for all you ball players, he’s got one called “Accelerating to the Ball”. This will give you drills to increase your first step speed and then turn that into rapid acceleration that will leave the competition behind.

Specifically for basketball players, there’s a DVD called “Basketball Band Speed and Conditioning” He takes you through: flexibility training, first step speed drills, speed strengthening, vertical and horizontal jumping drill, 8 week workout program and 8 week vertical jump program.

There is an e-manual and a DVD package titled “Total flexibility with resistance bands“, this is a very effective dynamic stetching program and it guides you through it step by step.
